The Intelligence Spectrum

Intelligence as ecological range: each threshold expands the range of ecologies an organism can couple with. More thresholds, wider range.

Choose a reference case on the right to see how its ecological range expands with each threshold it holds. Click any arc band to explore that threshold.
๐Ÿ› Termite Colony
Below all five thresholds
Stigmergic intelligence. Genomically sealed. Architecturally sophisticated but cognitively closed to novelty. 150 million years of frozen fitting.
๐Ÿ™ Octopus
Thresholds 1 and 2
Plastic and representational. Can learn and model absent features. But mortal and local: when the octopus dies, everything it learned dies with it.
๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› Corvids and Great Apes
Thresholds 1, 2 and 3
Social modelling adds the Dunbar space: genuine cognitive diversity in a stable group. But intelligence cannot scale beyond ~150 or generate new domains.
๐Ÿ‘ค Human
All five thresholds, bidirectionally coupled
The thresholds are recursive: each transforms those below it. Symbolic representation breaks the Dunbar ceiling. Recursive self-modelling makes the whole stack available for deliberate revision.

Each concentric band represents a threshold. The further out the bands extend, the wider the organism's ecological range: the variety of environments, timescales, and domains it can couple with effectively.

โšก
Present AI sits orthogonally to this spectrum
Massive capability in pattern extraction, search, and scale. Structurally absent across most thresholds: no embodiment, no intrinsic motivation, no social modelling, no recursive self-modelling. AI is not at a lower point on the same scale. It is in a different region of capability space entirely.

If intelligence were a scalar quantity, all systems could be ranked on a single axis. The profiles below show why that framing is incoherent. Each entity has a distinct shape across fourteen dimensions. Click any axis label for a detailed note.
